Tips for a Basic Wardrobe

Almost every girls' dilemma is always having to think about what to wear on different occasions. From simple lunch outs to dinner dates and late night movie dates. Since I am planning to reorganize my closet, I want to document it and share it to all of you.

I am a stay home mom, with one kid. Being not to be able to go out often, I cannot cope up with the latest trend in fashion, leaving me looking like losyang -- as would my fellow Pinoys call it. It just simply means looking old for her age and not taking care of her looks properly. In our culture, Filipinos love to dress up and always want to look their best. It helps me in a good way, to enhance my fashion sense, and to wake me up from the mindset that I have regarding dressing up.

After years of observing and from experience, fashion is not about the brand, or what our idols are exactly wearing, but it is about confidence and most importantly how it makes you look and feel good about yourself. Of course there are many rules about dressing up, BUT there is always an exception, depending on your personality.

So, to sum it all up, here is MY LIST (random) of basic pieces that I will want to have in my closet; you may want to add or omit depending on your preference.

Note: at least 2 PLAIN NEUTRAL COLOR for each piece, applicable to all

TOPS
  • basic tank top
  • crop top
  • tube top
  • t-shirt
  • button up shirt (long sleeves)
  • blouses (with sleeves)

DRESS
  • little black dress (and white)
  • sheath dress and/or bodycon dress
  • sleveless dress
  • multi way wrap dress (can be longer so you can use for formal occasions)

BOTTOMS
  • slacks (for formal)
  • jeans (for casual)
  • leggings (can be used for casual and sportswear)
  • shorts (flowy fabric and denim)
  • skirt (midi, high waist, mini --depending on your figure)

Blazer, Cardigan, etc.
  • blazers
  • cardigans
  • leather jacket
  • sweater

ACCESSORIES
  • statement necklaces
  • belts
  • sunglasses
  • earrings
  • rings
  • bracelets
  • bangles
  • scarf

FOOTWEAR
  • boots
  • strappy heels
  • pumps
  • flats
  • slippers

DIY! Make your own jewelry, charms and accessories using plastic bottles

Its do-it-yourself time!!

Recently, I have been researching about recycling/upcycling PET bottles because I tend to collect and give them away for them to sell. I knew that selling them would make me extra money, but it is not my priority as of the moment. I collect plastic bottles because we give it away to one of our relative, for him to help with his expenses. One day, something crossed my mind.

My inspiration is a capiz shell chandelier. Suddenly, I searched my stash of bottles looking for that perfect colored bottle to recycle and to create a capiz-inspired chandelier too! BUT, this is what I have found:

an old shampoo bottle

Looks familiar, right? Just a piece of trash, but you can turn this into beautiful creations that your mind can accumulate.

Here's what I did:

I cut the sides first using a cutter/ craft knife, then I switched to scissors for much easier handling. I cut all sides, from the side, to the bottom, to the side again, and to the top, so you will have 2 rectangular pieces. I prefer that shape for easier cutting. You can use any bottles in any colors, but this is fine too. After that, I cut these oval shapes, making sure that I cut only in the flat surface as much as possible. And, this is the result:

I now have 24 oval shaped pieces!  You can sand the edges if you like it smooth, or you can leave them as it is. You can cut any shapes that you like, any size, it is totally up to you. After gathering these pieces, it looked like the ones hanging on your store-bought earrings or necklaces, or even bracelets, but, you can make it on your own! Sad to say, I don't have jewelry tools on hand, so they will only sit on my storage for a while. You can also punch holes in them using wire or paper clips (metal ones), just heat them with a candle and poke holes in them. Good luck, happy crafting!!

First DIY! Making my baby shirt from old clothes

After having my baby so soon, I am thinking of ways to cut costs at all things, even in clothes!  My baby grew up so fast, and since we are living in the Philippines, my baby outgrew almost all the baby dresses made especially for Filipino babies so fast (my baby is quite tall for average Filipino babies)!  When I gave birth to my precious baby, I knew right away that we will be facing this kind of dilemma.

I wanted so much to make one shirt for his upcoming birthday, thinking that making a personal touch will make things special, (anyways, secondly, I am thinking how to save money HAHA) so I've decided to research about making baby clothes from scratch.  Luckily with the help of the internet, oh so plenty results appeared!

The best one I have come up so far was a tutorial about sewing a baby shirt onesie, by SEW MAMA SEW, with the link here.  Right away, I grasp for the nearest tape measure and measure my baby, but I find it too hard, because I don't have basic knowledge in taking baby measurements. I thought that there is no hope in doing this tutorial, but then again, I remembered that i ran across some tutorial that uses a nice fitting shirt as a guide for the measurements needed to alter clothes. Yay! Finally, I get to start it right away.

I found this shirt that looked like it will fit a baby boy nicely. Actually, it is my mom's shirt, but, if you will look closely, the checkered pattern suits men and women, and definitely, if you're not a professional dressmaker, you will hardly notice that it is actually for a woman, unless you will notice where the buttons are placed. (Buttons are actually placed on either left or right side for men and women, to tell the difference of both garments if you're buying from a thrift store and you're not sure if it is for men/women.)

Time to start sewing...

...and here is the finished product...

Hope you enjoyed it! Have a great week!
